Dhāraṇā 63 · The dark behind the eyelids
Close the eyes, meet the blackness that appears before them, spread the form of Bhairava across it, and become of one substance with what you have spread.
No moonless night is needed for this one. The requisite darkness is carried with you, one eyelid's thickness away, available in any room and at any hour. The verse begins evam eva — in the very same way — handing on the previous practice in portable form.
The method
Close the eyes — nimīlya ādau, at the start — and instead of drifting inward as one usually does behind closed lids, look. There is something before the eyes: kṛṣṇābham agrataḥ, a blackish field, never perfectly black, faintly alive with drifting colour. Ordinarily it is ignored as nothing. Here it is the object.
Then the distinctive move, which the open-night practice did not have: prasārya — spreading. Spread the form of Bhairava across that field: contemplate the blackness before you as the vast, boundless dark that the previous dhāraṇā sought outdoors, extending without limit in every direction, no longer an inch deep but bottomless. The small screen is deliberately magnified into the universal dark. Contemplating it so, says the verse, tanmayo bhavet — one becomes made of it. Not one who watches the dark: dark-natured, the seer dissolved into the seen.
The pair of practices
Verses 85 and 86 form a deliberate pair, and the order teaches. The outer night is stronger medicine — involuntary, environing, fear-bearing — but it depends on the calendar. The inner dark is always available but so familiar it seems trivial; hence the instruction to spread it, actively conferring on it the vastness the night has for free. Mastered together, they close the gap between practising and living: whoever can find Bhairava behind their own eyelids is never more than one blink from the practice.
एवमेव निमील्यादौ नेत्रे कृष्णाभमग्रतः । प्रसार्य भैरवं रूपं भावयंस्तन्मयो भवेत् ॥ ८६ ॥
In the same way, closing the eyes at the start and finding inky blackness before oneself, spreading out the Bhairava-form upon it and contemplating it, one becomes one with it.
इसी प्रकार, आँखें मूँदकर सामने काले अन्धकार को (देखकर), उस पर भैरव रूप को फैलाकर भावना करते हुए, साधक तन्मय हो जाता है।
