Dhāraṇā 62 · The dark fortnight

On a black night of the waning moon, gaze long into the darkness itself until the formless dark yields the form of Bhairava.

Where the last dhāraṇā turned partial light into infinite light, this one goes the other way and walks straight into the dark. On a moonless night the world's detail is withdrawn wholesale — and what most people flee as absence, the practitioner sits down inside as presence.

The method

The verse is specific about conditions: durniśāyām, a hard-dark night, in the kṛṣṇapakṣa, the waning fortnight when the moon rises late or not at all. Go where artificial light does not reach. Eyes open. Then contemplate the taimiraṃ rūpam — the inky blackness itself — and do it ciram, for a long while. Not scanning the dark for shapes, which is the eye's habit; resting on darkness as the single object, the way one would rest on a flame in trāṭaka, except the flame is the whole field.

For a long time nothing happens except the failure of the habit of seeing things. That failure is the practice working. Vision continues — the eyes are open, the visual field is fully present — but it presents no object, and awareness is left holding pure seeing with nothing seen. Sustained there, says the verse, one reaches the form of Bhairava: the dark stops being the absence of every form and is recognised as the one form that was never absent.

Why darkness is an honest teacher

Objects flatter the ordinary mind; each one confirms that awareness is a lamp for lighting things. Total dark withdraws the flattery. What remains — vivid, awake, undeniably present while presenting nothing — is consciousness caught without its objects, which is exactly what every dhāraṇā is hunting. The night does in bulk what subtle practices do by increments.

एवमेव दुर्निशायां कृष्णपक्षागमे चिरम्‌ । तैमिरं भावयन्रूपं भैरवं रूपमेष्यति ॥ ८५ ॥

In the very same way, on a dark night in the coming of the dark fortnight, contemplating the inky blackness for a long while, one reaches the form of Bhairava.
