Dhāraṇā 109 · No bondage, no release

Bondage and liberation are scarecrows that frighten only the already-frightened; all of it is reflection in the intellect, as the sun stands unwetted in many waters.

Near its end, the text turns its solvent on the last object left: the spiritual project itself. Bondage and liberation — the pair every practice assumes — are called vibhīṣikāḥ, bogeys, scarecrows: real enough to frighten, empty enough that only the frightened see them.

The contemplation

The verse is voiced in the first person, and it is meant to be taken up that way — not read about, but said from inside: there is no bondage of me, no liberation of me. Sit with each half. Bondage: search present experience for the actual fetter. Thoughts arise, sensations arise, none of them is a chain — the sense of being bound turns out to be itself just another arising, a feeling about the situation rather than a feature of it. Liberation: search for the one who would attain it, and meet the same recession the ‘I’-inquiry of dhāraṇā 105 met. Then the verse's diagnosis: these are frights bhītasya — for the frightened one. Fear projects the cage and then rattles it. The circle is perfect and vicious: only the assumption of bondage makes liberation urgent, and only the urgency makes the bondage feel real.

The sun in the waters

The closing image carries the doctrine: all this is reflection — pratibimba — in the buddhi, as the sun is reflected in waters. A pond's sun trembles when the pond trembles, shatters when a stone falls, drowns when the pond is muddied. The sun does none of these things. Bondage is the state of the reflection taken for the state of the source; liberation would be the reflection improving — equally beside the point. The practice is to shift standing from water to sky: to notice, in any troubled hour, that the trouble has the exact structure of ripples, and that what is aware of the ripples is not wet. This verse is the text's closest approach to anupāya, the no-method — for if nothing was ever bound, practice can only be the sun playing at climbing out of the pond.

न मे बन्धो न मोक्षो मे भीतस्यैता विभीषिकाः । प्रतिबिम्बमिदं बुद्धेर्जलेष्विव विवस्वतः ॥ १३२ ॥

'There is no bondage for me, nor any liberation; these are mere bugbears for one who is frightened. All this is a reflection in the intellect, as the sun is reflected in waters.'

'न मेरा बन्ध है, न मोक्ष; ये तो भयभीत के लिए डरावनी कल्पनाएँ हैं; यह सब बुद्धि में प्रतिबिम्ब मात्र है, जैसे जलों में सूर्य का (प्रतिबिम्ब)।'
