Dhāraṇā 89 · The well's mouth

Stand over a deep well or chasm and look down without thought — the mind, offered pure depth and given no commentary, dissolves clearly and at once.

Everyone knows the peculiar pull of looking down a well: the slight lift in the soles of the feet, the way attention is taken rather than given. This dhāraṇā does nothing but refuse to interrupt that taking.

The method

Find real depth — the verse says a well or any great pit, and a parapet, a cliff-edge railing, a stairwell's core will serve — and stand where you can look straight down into it in safety. Then look. The single condition the verse sets is avikalpa-mati: a mind free of constructs while it looks. No naming (how deep is that), no narrative (what if I fell), no managing the slight fear. Just the depth, entering through the eyes, met by nothing.

Held that way, the result is described with two adverbs the text rarely doubles: sadyaḥ — immediately — and sphuṭam — distinctly, unmistakably. The dissolution of mind this practice yields is not subtle, and the text knows it.

Why depth dissolves the mind

The mind sustains itself on graspable objects — things with edges, sizes, uses. Sheer depth is a perceptual object with no purchase: nothing to hold, nothing to do, and a faint bodily alarm that concentrates attention wonderfully. Offered such an object and forbidden its usual escape into commentary, the mind's grasping function idles — and citta-laya, its dissolution, is simply the name for that idling deepening until it is complete. The fear is doing honest work here: it pins attention in the present the way few chosen objects can. Dhāraṇā 92 will generalise exactly this point — the text lists the edge of a chasm among the involuntary moments when brahma-sattā draws near.

By standing above a deep chasm such as a well and gazing down into it, for one whose mind is free of thought, clearly and at once the dissolution of the mind takes place.

कुएँ आदि किसी गहरे गर्त के ऊपर खड़े होकर नीचे देखने से, निर्विकल्प बुद्धि वाले साधक का तत्काल और स्पष्ट रूप से चित्त-लय हो जाता है।
