Dhāraṇā 83 · Thought without a second thought

Make the mind supportless and do not build thoughts upon thoughts; in that unpropped state the self stands as the Supreme Self, and one is Bhairava.

Thoughts are not the problem; the chain is. Each vikalpa is brief and would die on its own — what keeps the mind churning is the second thought about the first, the third about the second. This dhāraṇā cuts the chain at its only weak point: the link.

The method

Two instructions, fused. First: nirādhāraṃ manaḥ kṛtvā — make the mind supportless. Give it no perch: no mantra, no image, no breath-count, none of the objects on which even meditative minds habitually lean. Second, the sharper one: vikalpān na vikalpayet — do not think thoughts about the thoughts. A thought arises; it is neither resisted nor pursued nor — this is the discipline — commented upon. No 'there is a thought', no 'I should not be thinking', no appraisal of how the practice is going, each of which is a fresh vikalpa dressed as supervision. The first thought, denied a second, subsides of itself, the way a wave that nothing reinforces flattens back into water.

What remains when the chain stops is stated as the verse's climax: tadātma-paramātmatve — then, in the identity of the self with the Supreme Self — bhairavo mṛga-locane: one is Bhairava, O doe-eyed one. Nothing is attained; an identity that commentary was obscuring is simply left visible.

The economy of the instruction

Fighting thought head-on fails always and everywhere, because the fighter is a thought. This verse's elegance is that it asks for no victory over the first vikalpa at all — only abstention from the second, which, unlike the first, has not yet arisen and therefore need not be defeated, merely not manufactured. The practice happens entirely in the gap after a thought, the one place where effortlessness is honest: doing nothing there is genuinely doing nothing. Sustained, the mind does not become empty so much as unemployed — and its unemployment is the Supreme Self's visibility.

निराधारं मनः कृत्वा विकल्पान्न विकल्पयेत्‌ । तदात्मपरमात्मत्वे भैरवो मृगलोचने ॥ १०६ ॥

Making the mind supportless, one should not form thought-constructs out of the thoughts; then, in the identity of the self with the Supreme Self, one is Bhairava, O doe-eyed one.

मन को निराधार बनाकर विकल्पों का विकल्पन न करे; तब आत्मा और परमात्मा की एकता में, हे मृगलोचने, साधक भैरव हो जाता है।
