Dhāraṇā 8 · The Bridge of the Brows
Filling swiftly to the crown, breaking through by the bridge of the raised brows, the mind made thought-free — and the all-pervading surges up.
This is the fastest verse in the breath group — everything in it moves. The Śakti fills the body to the crown āśu, swiftly; a barrier is broken; and what follows is not an arrival but an udgama, an upsurge. Where the previous dhāraṇā dismantled a ladder rung by rung, this one takes the whole height in one pour.
The three movements
- Fill. Tayā pūrya — with that Śakti, the risen energy of the preceding dhāraṇās, fill upward to mūrdhānta, the crown's end. Not inch by inch: the image is of a vessel flooded to its brim in one motion, on the carriage of a single in-breath if the breath offers itself.
- Break through. Bhaṅktvā bhrūkṣepa-setunā — by the bridge of the thrown brows. The slight upward cast of the inner gaze, the gesture a person makes when looking up without moving the head, is here a setu, a causeway across the barrier at the crown. The verse treats a movement most people make idly a dozen times a day as an instrument of breakthrough.
- Empty the mind. Nirvikalpaṃ manaḥ kṛtvā — and this third movement is the one that decides the other two. Filled and pierced, the mind must then be without a single construct, or the surge has a witness standing apart from it, and a witness apart is the very division being crossed.
What surges
The promise is packed into two compounds: sarvordhve, in that which is above all, there is sarvagodgamaḥ — the welling-up of the all-going, the omnipresent. Note the direction of the claim. The practice goes up, to the point above the crown; what it finds there goes everywhere. Height was the road, not the destination — the topmost point matters because it is where the body's vertical geometry runs out, and when geometry runs out, what is left has no location to be confined to. The upsurge is awareness recognising that it was never local.
तया पूर्याशु मूर्धान्तं भङ्क्त्वा भ्रूक्षेपसेतुना । निर्विकल्पं मनः कृत्वा सर्वोर्ध्वे सर्वगोद्गमः ॥ ३१ ॥
Filling up to the crown swiftly with that Śakti, breaking through by the bridge of the raised eyebrows, and making the mind free of all thought — there arises, in the all-transcending, the upsurge of all-pervadingness.
