Dhāraṇā 76 · Still in the storm

In the very field of desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy, hold the intellect utterly motionless — and what remains standing is the Reality alone.

The tradition lists six enemies — desire, anger, greed, delusion, intoxication, envy — and every moral system tells you to fight them. This dhāraṇā gives the opposite order: when one of them erupts, do not fight, do not flee, do not follow. Go motionless inside it.

The method

The verse names its arena without flinching: kāma-krodha-lobha-moha-mada-mātsarya-gocare — in the very sphere, the grazing-ground, of the passions. The instruction: buddhiṃ nistimitāṃ kṛtvā — make the intellect completely still. Anger is up, the heat is real, the story is screaming for endorsement — and the buddhi, the faculty that judges, plans and takes sides, is held silent. No verdict on the offender. No verdict on yourself for being angry. No plan. The emotion is left entirely intact and entirely unserved.

What happens then is the verse's discovery: tat tattvam avaśiṣyate — that Reality alone remains. An emotion is a current of sheer energy plus a running commentary that aims it. Withhold the commentary and the current has no target and no author; it stands revealed as bare intensity of consciousness — śakti undressed. The storm does not die down so much as lose its 'about', and what is left blazing in the field is what was blazing all along underneath the story.

Neither indulgence nor suppression

Both classical errors keep the buddhi busy: indulgence sets it to work justifying the passion, suppression sets it to work condemning. Either way the commentary continues and the energy stays yoked to the drama. The stillness taught here is a third thing with no common measure with 'controlling yourself' — the emotion is granted full presence and denied all service. This is among the most demanding dhāraṇās in the collection precisely because its occasions choose you, arrive at maximum voltage, and give no warning; and it is among the most prized, because the six enemies are the most reliable event in any human day.

Making the intellect motionless in the very sphere of desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and jealousy, that Reality alone remains.

काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह, मद और मात्सर्य के क्षेत्र में बुद्धि को निस्तिमित (निश्चल) बनाने पर, केवल वह तत्त्व ही शेष रह जाता है।
