Dhāraṇā 66 · Riding the visarga

Take a letter that ends in visarga and carry awareness to the very end of that final breath; with the mind left supportless there, the eternal is touched.

The previous dhāraṇā cut the visarga away; this one keeps it and rides it. The pair belong together like two ways through the same door — one refuses the emission, the other follows the emission until it runs out, and both arrive where sound does not reach.

The method

Take a letter bearing the visarga — aḥ is the natural choice, the first vowel with its final breath, though the verse asks only for varṇasya savisargasya, any letter that has one. Sound it, and this time the instruction is directional: visargāntaṃ citiṃ kuru — carry the cognising awareness to the very end of the visarga. The visarga is an unvoiced release of breath after the vowel; it does not stop, it fades. Follow the fading. Stay with the sound past the point where the voice has ceased, through the thinning breath, to the exact place where the emission has entirely spent itself.

At that end there is nothing left to attend to — and that is the practice's second instruction: nirādhāreṇa cittena, with a mind gone supportless. Awareness was given a vehicle and the vehicle has dissolved under it mid-air. If it does not scramble back to a new object, it stands on nothing — and standing on nothing, says the verse, spṛśed brahma sanātanam: one touches the eternal Brahman. Touches — the verb of contact, not of thought.

Emission and its endविसर्ग

Visarga, written as two points, means emission — and in Trika it names the power by which the Absolute pours itself into manifestation. Every act of speech re-enacts that pouring in miniature: an impulse, a sound, a release into silence. To ride one release all the way home is to trace manifestation back along its own outbound path. The eternal is met at the end of the visarga because the end of emission is, read backwards, the source of it.

वर्णस्य सविसर्गस्य विसर्गान्तं चितिं कुरु । निराधारेण चित्तेन स्पृशेद्ब्रह्म सनातनम्‌ ॥ ८९ ॥

Carry the cognition (citi) up to the very end of the visarga of a letter that has visarga; with a supportless mind one then touches the eternal Brahman.

विसर्ग सहित किसी वर्ण के विसर्ग के अन्त तक चिति (बोध) को ले जाए; निराधार चित्त से साधक सनातन ब्रह्म का स्पर्श कर लेता है।
