Dhāraṇā 59 · The moving seat

On a swing, in a moving vehicle, or gently rocking the body itself — when the mind grows calm inside motion, a divine current flows in.

Everyone has fallen quiet in a moving vehicle, or been rocked toward stillness on a swing. This dhāraṇā takes that ordinary lull — usually wasted as drowsiness — and names it a door.

The method

Two forms are offered. Sit on something that moves — calāsana, a swing, a cart, today a train or a car in which you are not the driver — and let the motion carry the body without any participation from you. Or, lacking a vehicle, sway the body yourself: śanaiḥ, slowly, gently, a small rocking from the hips, so unhurried that it costs nothing to sustain.

The practice is not the motion; it is what the motion makes possible. Movement continuously occupies the body's balancing, gripping, adjusting intelligence — the layer of mind that normally guards posture. With that layer absorbed, the mānasa bhāva, the mental state, is left with nothing to do, and the verse asks you to let it settle completely: praśānte — when it has become wholly calm. Calm inside motion, not instead of it. Then, the promise: divyaugham āpnuyāt — one attains the divine flood.

The floodदिव्यौघ

Ogha is a strong word — a current, a flood, water moving in mass. The state that opens here is not a static blank but a carried-ness: the same quality the rocking body had, transposed into consciousness. In the tantric lineages divyaugha also names the divine current of transmission, the stream by which teaching descends; whether or not the verse intends that technical sense, the image is the same — something larger takes over the carrying.

Few dhāraṇās are this available. A train, a bus, a swing, a rocking chair — anywhere motion is given to the body rather than made by it, the condition is already present. The discrimination the verse asks for is between calm inside motion and mere distraction by it: when the rocking is watched until the mind stops bracing against it, the settling it names begins of itself.

चलासने स्थितस्याथ शनैर्वा देहचालनात्‌ । प्रशान्ते मानसे भावे देवि दिव्यौघमाप्नुयात्‌ ॥ ८२ ॥

For one seated on a moving seat (a swing or a moving vehicle), or by gently swaying the body, when the mental state has grown wholly calm, O Goddess, one attains the divine flow (of consciousness).
