Dhāraṇā 57 · The tongue at the centre
Tongue laid to the palate, mouth open, awareness thrown into the middle, and the syllable ha sounded only in the mind — a whole-mouth posture that ends in the Peaceful.
This is one of the few dhāraṇās that asks for a physical posture — not of the limbs, but of the mouth. The tongue is turned back to the middle of the palate, the mouth is left open, and into the hollow this creates the awareness is thrown. Then a single sound, ha, is made — with the mind alone, never the voice.
The method
Sit and let the jaw release until the mouth stands slightly open. Curl the tongue gently back so its underside rests toward the soft palate — the verse says madhya-jihve, tongue at the middle. Do not strain it into a full khecarī lock; the instruction is placement, not contortion. The mouth held open in this way stops the habitual swallowing, murmuring, sub-vocalising by which the mind talks to itself all day. Speech is disabled at its root.
Now cast the attention — cetanā, the verse's word — into the middle: the open cavern of the mouth and throat, and through it the centre of the body. Into that stillness sound ha mentally. Not repeated as a racing japa; sounded, and allowed to fade, and sounded again when it has wholly gone. The verse promises that one so occupied dissolves into the Peaceful — śānta, the state where the utterance and the utterer both go quiet.
Why haह
In the Trika's alphabet doctrine ha is the last consonant, the sound of breath itself, the letter that in the haṃsa of every breath-cycle stands for the exhaled release. To sound it mentally while the mouth is disabled is to make the gesture of expression with nothing expressed — energy rises toward utterance and, finding no outlet, turns back on its source. The dissolution the verse names is that turning back completed.
मध्यजिह्वे स्फारितास्ये मध्ये निक्षिप्य चेतनाम् । होच्चारं मनसा कुर्वंस्ततः शान्ते प्रलीयते ॥ ८० ॥
With the tongue turned to the middle (the palate) and the mouth held open, casting the awareness into the centre, and mentally making the sound 'HA', one is then dissolved into the Peaceful.
जिह्वा को मध्य (तालु) में लगाकर, मुख को खुला रखकर, मध्य में चेतना को रखकर, मन से 'ह' का उच्चारण करते हुए, साधक शान्त में लीन हो जाता है।
