Dhāraṇā 50 · Wherever the Mind Finds Satisfaction
Wherever the mind finds contentment, hold it exactly there — for there and there the very nature of supreme bliss unfolds.
The joy-sequence closes by handing over its master key. Union, laughter, reunion, food, music — each was one worked example. Now the rule they were examples of: yatra yatra manas-tuṣṭiḥ — wherever, wherever the mind finds satisfaction — manas tatraiva dhārayet, hold the mind exactly there; tatra tatra, in each such place, the very nature of parānanda, supreme bliss, unfolds.
The reversal of renunciationतुष्टि
Most yogas treat the mind's attractions as the enemy: attachment is the chain, so the places the mind loves to rest are the places to be dragged away from. This verse quietly turns the whole apparatus around. The mind's spontaneous satisfactions are treated as information — each one marks a spot where consciousness has, for a moment, stopped seeking and touched its own contentment. The error was never the resting; it was leaving so quickly, and crediting the object. So the instruction is dhārayet, hold it there: when satisfaction comes — any honest satisfaction, however domestic — do not move on, and do not transfer the credit outward. Stay in the contentment itself until it opens.
The doubled words are the verse's own emphasis and should be kept: yatra yatra… tatra tatra — wherever, whichever, every single time. No catalogue of approved objects is given, and that omission is the doctrine. The door is not in the object at all; it is in the tuṣṭi, and tuṣṭi is everywhere the mind actually, truthfully rests.
Discernment the verse assumes
One distinction keeps the practice from becoming its own parody. Satisfaction is not craving's satisfaction-promise: craving points at the next thing, and its excitement is precisely unrest. The verse's tuṣṭi is the settled taste of the present thing — the moment the reaching has ceased. Held there, attention discovers the same fact each of the worked examples uncovered one by one: contentment has no content. Under the tea, the song, the face, the fullness, it is a single flavour — and the verse names it parānanda-svarūpam, not a bliss the Supreme gives, but the Supreme's own nature, unfolding in a kitchen or a concert wherever anyone dares to stop and stay. Whoever masters this one verse carries the whole sequence loose in a pocket.
यत्र यत्र मनस्तुष्टिर्मनस्तत्रैव धारयेत् । तत्र तत्र परानन्दस्वरूपं संप्रवर्तते ॥ ७३ ॥
Wherever the mind finds its satisfaction, there one should hold the mind; there and there the very nature of supreme bliss unfolds.
जहाँ-जहाँ मन को सन्तोष (तुष्टि) मिले, वहीं-वहीं मन को धारण करे; वहाँ-वहाँ परानन्द का स्वरूप प्रकट हो जाता है।
