Dhāraṇā 34 · The Universe as Void
Contemplate this whole universe as void, dissolve the mind into that very void, and become the vessel of dissolution.
Addressed to Mahādevī, the instruction is bare: contemplate this whole universe as śūnya-bhūta — become void — and let the mind go into dissolution tatraiva, in that very voidness. The one who does so, the verse says, becomes tal-laya-bhājanam: the vessel, the fit receptacle, of that dissolution. With this verse the collection enters its great void-sequence.
How to see a world as emptyशून्य-भावना
Do not begin by arguing the world away. Begin with how things actually stand in experience: every object you have ever met, you met as an appearance in awareness — never once as a thing holding itself up from its own side. Let that observation soak the field of perception until the massed solidity of the world loosens, the way a building seen in a dream loosens the moment you suspect you are dreaming. What the contemplation removes is not the appearing but the imagined substance under the appearing. What is left appearing is — void.
Then the second movement, which the verse insists on: the mind that has been doing the contemplating is dissolved into that same void. It cannot remain outside as the observer of emptiness, or the practice halts at a subtle picture — one more object, with 'void' for its label.
Becoming the vessel
Bhājana is a domestic word — a bowl, a receptacle — and it carries the teaching. The practitioner does not achieve dissolution as a feat; she becomes the place where dissolution is received and held. Held for what? For everything: a vessel of laya is one in whom any experience that arises can complete its natural return into the source, unresisted. The practice done once is a meditation. Established, it is a way of standing in the world in which the world is continuously coming home.
विश्वमेतन्महादेवि शून्यभूतं विचिन्तयेत् । तत्रैव च मनो लीनं ततस्तल्लयभाजनम् ॥ ५७ ॥
O Mahādevī, one should contemplate this whole universe as become void, and dissolve the mind in that very (void); thereupon one becomes the vessel of that dissolution.
हे महादेवि, इस समस्त विश्व को शून्यभूत हुआ चिन्तन करे, और मन को उसी में लीन कर दे; तब साधक उस लय का भाजन (पात्र) बन जाता है।
