Dhāraṇā 27 · Moment After Moment

Throw the mind into the dvādaśānta anyhow, anywhere, every moment — and as its fluctuations starve, an extraordinary state arrives within days.

The previous dhāraṇā was a craftsman's discipline; this one is almost reckless. Yathā tathā yatra tatra — anyhow, anywhere: no posture, no preparation, no ceremony. Just one act, repeated with total disregard for conditions: throw the mind into the dvādaśānta. Now. And now again.

The method

The arithmetic of starvation

The verse explains itself with a genitive: this is for the one kṣīṇa-vṛtteḥ — whose fluctuations are wasting away. Every mental wave needs a run of moments to build: a worry, a fantasy, a resentment each require uninterrupted time to gather mass. A mind flung to the dvādaśānta at every remembered moment keeps cutting the run. No wave is fought — fighting is itself a wave — but none is given room to crest, and the whole weather-system of the mind is slowly starved of the continuity it feeds on. Then comes the text's rarest gesture: a schedule. Dinaiḥ — within days — arises vailakṣaṇyam, an extraordinariness, a state unlike any mark or description. A text that promises eternity everywhere else here promises results inside a week, and the promise is credible precisely because the method leaves no gap in the day for the old weather to reform.

The informality is the teaching. 'By whatever means, anywhere at all' strips the dvādaśānta practice of every ritual condition — no posture, no session, no preparation; the throw of attention is made in a queue as validly as on a seat. What matters is the moment-after-moment return, each throw starving the fluctuations a little further. The verse's promise of days rather than years is among the most concrete timelines in the whole text, and it is attached to persistence, not to skill.

यथा तथा यत्र तत्र द्वादशान्ते मनः क्षिपेत्‌ । प्रतिक्षणं क्षीणवृत्तेर्वैलक्षण्यं दिनैर्भवेत्‌ ॥ ५० ॥

One should cast the mind — by whatever means, anywhere at all — into the dvādaśānta moment after moment. As its fluctuations dwindle, within a few days an extraordinary state arises.
