Dhāraṇā 106 · Words weighed by meaning
Eternal, all-pervading lord, supportless, pervasive, master of everything — dwelling on these words moment by moment, in strict accord with what they mean, one arrives at fulfilment.
This is contemplation at its most classical: a short string of attribute-words — eternal, all-pervading, supportless, master of all — taken not as praise to be recited but as meanings to be entered, one at a time, again and again.
The method
The verse's decisive phrase is arthānurūpataḥ — in conformity with the meaning. Without it, the practice collapses into the litany it superficially resembles. With it, each word becomes a task. Take nitya, eternal: do not merely think ‘eternal, yes’ — actually attempt the meaning. Try to conceive what is not touched by before and after; watch the mind fail interestingly; let the failure carve its impression. Then vibhu, the pervading lord: presence without a boundary — try to find the edge and find none. Nirādhāra: resting on nothing; every support you propose is itself upheld by it. Vyāpaka, pervasive even of the thought now thinking it. Akhilādhipaḥ: that to which everything whatsoever answers. Then begin again, because the verse says pratikṣaṇam — at every moment. The circuit is walked continually, each pass cutting the channel deeper.
Why word-meditation can work at all
This is the śākta strategy in miniature: thought turned against thought, the pure concept used to dissolve impure ones. A mind cannot hold ‘supportless, boundaryless, eternal’ as meant and simultaneously run its ordinary program of edges, props, and deadlines — the two contents are structurally incompatible, and sustained occupation by the first starves the second. Language, usually the great agent of limitation, is here run in reverse: words whose meanings exceed every image lever the mind past imagery altogether. The verse's fruit-word is kṛtārthaḥ — one whose purpose is accomplished, whose work is done. A person saturated in those five meanings has nothing left to become that the meanings do not already assert.
नित्यो विभुर्निराधारो व्यापकश्चाखिलाधिपः । शब्दान्प्रतिक्षणं ध्यायन्कृतार्थोऽर्थानुरूपतः ॥ १२९ ॥
'Eternal, the all-pervading Lord, supportless, pervasive, master of all' — meditating moment by moment on these words in accordance with their meaning, one is fulfilled.
'नित्य, विभु (व्यापक प्रभु), निराधार, व्यापक और अखिल का अधिपति' — इन शब्दों का उनके अर्थ के अनुरूप प्रतिक्षण ध्यान करता हुआ साधक कृतार्थ हो जाता है।
